An Icon of Steam Engineering — Recreated in 1/35 Scale

The Burrell traction engine is more than a piece of industrial history. With its distinctive proportions, exposed mechanical components and unmistakable steam-era character, it is an icon of British engineering.

Our 1/35 scale model is a faithful reproduction of the historic Burrell engine “Old Duch” (AF 4393, serial 2417, built in 1901). From the overall structure and characteristic Burrell green livery to the details of its compound engine and running gear, the model is based on the real, preserved and operational machine.

Bringing all of this character and engineering detail into 1/35 scale presented its own challenges. Our goal was not simply to make a smaller Burrell, but to preserve what makes the original machine so distinctive — while creating a model that is enjoyable to build, paint and display.

A historic machine. A true-to-source reproduction. Now in 1/35 scale.

A Machine from the Age of Steam

Built in 1901 by Charles Burrell & Sons, this General Purpose Engine reflects the era when steam powered agriculture, transport, and industry across Britain. Today, engine No. 2417 — known as “Old Duch” — remains operational and continues to appear at steam rallies, preserving the sound and motion of early mechanical engineering.

Capturing Every Detail

From the distinctive silhouette to the smallest visible mechanical components, the 1/35 Burrell is designed to retain the character and complexity of the original machine. The combination of fine surface detail and carefully proportioned components gives the finished model depth and presence at every angle.

True-to-Source Reproduction

Developed from the preserved and operational “Old Duch”, the model faithfully captures the distinctive proportions, mechanical structure and character of the original Burrell traction engine.

Detailed Engineering

The complex machinery of the original Burrell has been carefully translated into 1/35 scale, with individual components capturing the distinctive engine, running gear, wheels and structural details that make this machine so recognisable.

Designed for the Build

The model has been developed with the modeller in mind, with carefully considered part breakdowns that make complex assemblies manageable. Where practical, components can be painted separately before final assembly, helping you achieve a clean and detailed result..

Detailed Painting & Assembly Guide

The included illustrated guide takes you through the complete build, from individual components and painting stages to final assembly. Clear references for each major part help you plan the painting process and achieve the best result as the model comes together.
