BA-64B — Soviet 4×4 Light Armored Car

The BA-64 was a Soviet light 4×4 armored car developed during the Second World War as a versatile reconnaissance and liaison vehicle. Based on the chassis of the GAZ-64 and later GAZ-67B, the BA-64 combined a compact armored hull with four-wheel drive, allowing it to operate effectively on roads and rough terrain. The vehicle entered service with the Red Army in 1942 and remained in production throughout the war.

The improved BA-64B variant was introduced in 1943 and incorporated a number of improvements over the original BA-64. The vehicle featured a welded armored hull, a turret-mounted machine gun, and a four-cylinder GAZ-M engine driving all four wheels. Changes to the chassis and suspension improved stability and handling, while the relatively light weight of the vehicle allowed it to maintain good mobility across difficult terrain.

The BA-64B was primarily used for reconnaissance, liaison, command, and infantry support duties. Its compact dimensions and four-wheel-drive system made it particularly useful for scouting and communication tasks, while the armored hull provided protection against small-arms fire and shell fragments. The vehicle was also employed to escort convoys and support advancing infantry units.

BA-64B armored cars saw extensive service on the Eastern Front and participated in major Soviet operations from the middle of the war through the final campaigns of 1945.
