BTR-70 — Soviet 8×8 Armored Personnel Carrier

The BTR-70 was a Soviet eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier developed in the early 1970s as a successor to the BTR-60. It was designed to retain the mobility and amphibious capability of its predecessor while improving protection, mobility, and the ability to deploy infantry under battlefield conditions. The BTR-70 entered service with the Soviet Army in 1972 and became one of the principal Soviet armored personnel carriers of the late Cold War period.

The vehicle retained an 8×8 drivetrain with independent suspension and a centralized tire-pressure regulation system. Power was provided by two gasoline engines, while the revised hull offered improved protection and internal arrangements compared with the BTR-60. The BTR-70 remained fully amphibious, using water jets for propulsion on water, and its eight-wheel configuration provided good mobility across difficult terrain.

The most recognizable configuration was the BTR-70 equipped with a small enclosed turret mounting a 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. The vehicle was also fitted with improved side and rear troop access compared with the BTR-60, allowing infantry to leave the vehicle more effectively while under battlefield conditions. The combination of protected transport capability and heavy machine-gun armament made the BTR-70 suitable for both infantry transport and battlefield support.

The BTR-70 entered widespread service with the Soviet Army and was exported to Warsaw Pact countries and other allied states. It saw extensive operational use during the Cold War, including in the Soviet-Afghan War, where its mobility and amphibious capability remained valuable but its gasoline engines and troop access arrangements also revealed limitations under combat conditions. The vehicle was used for infantry transport, reconnaissance, command, and support missions.

The combination of its distinctive eight-wheel layout, sloped armored hull, compact turret, and amphibious capability made the BTR-70 one of the most recognizable Soviet armored personnel carriers of the Cold War era. Its widespread service and export, together with its extensive use in Afghanistan and other conflicts, have made the BTR-70 a particularly popular subject among military vehicle enthusiasts and scale modelers.

Wheel installation

The wheels are designed to fit directly onto the standard mounting points of Trumpeter and ACE kits without any additional modifications.
We recommend sanding the contact points where supports were attached with fine-grit sandpaper for the best finish.
